Old School Loving

Hello, Cabbages!

We’ve had a recent holiday just yesterday, which meant I got an extended “weekend”—definitely long weekends are the best time to catch up on my reading, but force of laziness is just too strong. So I did the second most productive activity of a [lazy] spuds: I caught up with my [massive] TV series line up. I got the 6^th episode of Grimm (season 5), until my DVD started to not cooperate; and I also started Scream Queens.

My friends have been pressuring me to watch Game of Thrones already; and the way I see it, I have enough time until the last season comes out next year. My boyfriend and I decided to binge watch it together, and yesterday, we’ve finally finished the first season! I understand why there’s a lot of hype around the series, too much conspiracy and lies and not to mention, deceit. I think I’m going to have to post a whole TV series review about this probably by tomorrow [or today, if the feeling of excitement becomes unbearable]; and we’ll start season 2 tonight!

Anyway, as you are all aware, I haven’t gotten far with the 2^nd book of Soman Chainani’s School for Good and Evil, and sadly, I’ve decided to put it aside for now. I love it, but I just haven’t been feeling the story. Since I’m quite hung up with Game of Thrones, I’ve started And I Darken by Kiersten White today. TOP TEN ALL TIME FAVORITE “OLD SCHOOL” BOOKS

I started on reading at a very young age; my mom used to read The Berenstein Bears to me at night. She love books [though she hardly reads now], and she’s passed on the hobby to me because I grew up with enormous bookshelves, overflowing with different adventures. Today, I’d like to share a few of the “middle grade” books I enjoyed back during my Grade School years—some of these might no longer be being printed now.

 

7.THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS OF DORIE DILTS: DUMPED BY POPULAR DEMAND

This book is about Dorie, a science geek, who transferred to a new school and wanted to become popular. She then befriends the Queen Bee and her minions, who all have been dumped by Grant Braddish. I love this book so much; a friend of mine lent it to me when I was in high school. This doesn’t really go way back as much the other books in this list, but when I requested to have a copy purchased for me from a bookstore’s supplier, it no longer print copies of this.

6.GOOSEBUMPS

Who wouldn’t know about this super popular horror books for youngsters?  I’ve seen the movie, and I LOVED IT! Honestly, I haven’t read newer ones published, I think it’s entitled The Fear Street—it’s closely similar to the original Goosebumps. Memories of waking up early on a weekend to catch an episode of Goosebumps return whenever I see few copies in book sales. This used to be my fix when I was 10 years old, and whenever I finished one, I’d feel like I’m a strong girl for surpassing such a bone chilling story of R.L Stine. Right now, I think I’ve only managed to save one: which is a Choose Your Own Adventure: Goosebumps.

5.LIZZIE MCGUIRE

There came a time when this was the most glorious books ever! This series were pretty much my “adolescent” books, I thought I was a grown-up because I was able to read this. I got started on this because of my grade school friend who decided to sign us up as library help every Friday, and lunch time of every school day. There was also a TV series for this, which I haven’t really gotten to watching—though I did re-watch the movie a hundred times.

4.THE BABYSITTERS CLUB

I don’t remember much about this, but I won’t forget it though. Back when I was younger [90’s generation], middle grade books are written like these. Mostly they’re contemporary, and they always contain a group of friends. I miss series like this, I wish there’d be more of this—something that gives a right amount of ideas about romance [puppy love, and first crushes].

3.SWEET VALLEY KIDS/TWINS

Before Monster High and The Clique, there used to be Sweet Valley Kids! I remember rushing towards the library to borrow books from this series before the rest of my classmates did. I think my twin obsession came to be because I kept on reading this book—Elizabeth and Jessica. Its written with certain topics/dilemmas per book that tackles familiar problems, friends, school and sibling rivalry. I believe Francine Pascal wrote a particular book that gives you a glimpse of how the twins ended up ten years later, after the last Sweet Valley High was written.

2.JUNIE B. JONES

This is actually more of a kid’s book, rather than a middle-grade book. It’s leveled with books like Geronimo Stilton, and The Adventures of Bailey School Kids. Junie B Jones is a young girl who’s got a lot of silly adventures and funny tricks. Back then, this was the best humor there was—but it’s sort of like a classic now.

1.NANCY DREW

Raise your hand if you haven’t read any Nancy Drew book! I don’t care what other people say, this is a classic for me. Before all the badass heroines came to be in the books nowadays, there was Nancy Drew, who outsmarts people with her wit and natural knack for solving mysteries. Of course since I was such a fangirl, I watched the movie adaptation—can you guess? Hundred times, yes.

There’s a lot more titles, especially Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, but I wasn’t able to finish all of the books in the series. I did watch the movie AND I am so pumped for the upcoming TV series in Netflix! It’s finally happening, people! After years and years of [im]patiently waiting, it is about to take Netflix by storm.
